The Story

Before a flood-control channel was constructed in 1969, flash floods from 49 Palms Canyon could wash out the main road and surge into town. The mural depicts the famous floods of the 1940s—including the contrast between worried business owners and children riding the floodwater in inner tubes and handmade boats.
