The Story
Pioneer homesteaders Bill and Frances Keys made their life at the Desert Queen Ranch in what is now Joshua Tree National Park. Bill arrived in Twentynine Palms in 1910 and became known as a cattleman, prospector, assayer, and remarkably resourceful homesteader. He married Frances Mae Lawton in 1918, and they raised five children at the isolated ranch.
