History of the Oasis of Murals
The Oasis of Murals grew from a community effort to celebrate the history, character, and identity of Twentynine Palms through public art. The project developed during the 1990s and became closely associated with Action Council for 29 Palms.
The murals tell stories rooted in the desert: homesteading, mining, transportation, wildlife, community life, and the military history that has long been part of Twentynine Palms.
Reconstructing the Story
This Legacy Project distinguishes between documented history and firsthand recollection. Where surviving records disagree, those differences will be preserved and investigated rather than silently erased.
More archival records and oral histories will be added as research continues.
