The Story

The mural imagines the Oasis of Mara in earlier times, with a Native American woman holding a bowl of the oasis water and looking skyward. The 2021 brochure says the oasis once stretched for nearly a mile across the southern portion of Twentynine Palms, from what is now the Joshua Tree National Park Oasis Visitor Center to the 29 Palms Inn. It was commissioned by Inn owners Paul and Jane Smith in partnership with Action 29 and painted by Makoto Hashigami of Tokyo, Japan.
