The Story

The mural recalls the desert gold rush and the prospectors who camped wherever water could be found in the hills near Twentynine Palms and what is now Joshua Tree National Park. The camp’s memorable name comes from the gold-recovery process: miners normally used chamois leather when separating gold from mercury, but local legend says that when chamois was unavailable, someone would sacrifice a sock for the job.
